Plüschow Castle
2002

I developed two works - 'stable' and 'single room' - during a work and exhibition project at Plüschow Castle in Mecklenburg. In both work, the act of opening closed spaces is in the forefront. An empty stable (outside the castle) and a storeroom (inside the castle) were treated and opened to the public.

stable
the cleaning, re-naming and opening of an empty cow stable
Plüschow, july 2002

The middle part of the stable is cleaned and swept, thus free of old straw, spider webs, dust, etc.
On the backside of 80 signs that contain information about the number and type of cows, the fat content of their milk etc. cow names are stamped. The water feeders are filled with 20 litres of milk - the daily amount of milk typically given by a cow after its first calf.
At 6pm on July 20, 2002, the stable was opened to visitors for three hours.

single room

After clearing out and cleaning the store room, a cushion and cards are placed in a niche of the room. Visitors are asked to come in, close the door, sit down and choose one card.

HOW WOULD YOU FEEL?
WHERE ARE WE REALLY GOING?
WHAT WILL HELP US TO UNDERSTAND
WHY WE ARE HERE
WIR GEHEN ZUSAMMEN
WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM A LOOK AT IT?
YOU CAN HAVE PARADISE ON EARTH
DORT HABE ICH NICHTS ZU SUCHEN
NOT AT ALL
WIR WERDEN SEHEN
WHERE DO YOU COME FROM?
ZU WEIT WEG SEIN
ICH NEHME WAHR
JUST THINK OF WHAT THIS POWER CAN MEAN
NO FEELINGS AT ALL
IN DAS BILD EINTRETEN
THINK ABOUT THIS
THE WORDS MEAN THE SAME THING
SELBST HIER IM NAHEN ZUSAMMEN
THERE CAN BE NO DOUBT
ALLES DRÄNGT NACH INNEN
VERY FEW EVEN KNOW WHAT IT IS
SIT HAPPIER
ES SIEHT GANZ DANACH AUS
NOCH NICHT SOWEIT
YOU CAN DO IT
WHERE DO YOU STAND
I SEE IT
IRGEND JEMAND GIBT ES IMMER
GET OUT FROM AMONG THEM
HOW TO AVOID BEING PART OF THE WORLD
IT IS UP TO YOU TO DO THIS
WHICH ONE WILL YOU TAKE?

The english sentences that appear on the cards were taken from a book about scientology, from which another artist was using its illustrations. The German sentences were written by me during my stay in Plüschow.
